Rainy River Mine
Situated in beautiful northwestern Ontario, 65 km northwest of Fort Frances, the Rainy River Mine is an open pit and underground, gold and silver producing, residential mine site.

The Rainy River Mine, located adjacent to the Ontario/Minnesota border is 65 kilometers northwest of Fort Frances, Ontario and is situated half way between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Thunder Bay, Ontario. The area is home to more than 130 species of birds and large populations of moose, black bear and deer. Applicants who reside in Northwestern Ontario and have experience working in a cross-cultural environment, coupled with knowledge of the unique challenges and opportunities presented to those living in the Northwest Ontario, are assets. Position Reports To: Capital Projects Superintendent/Supervisor

Position Overview
As a member of the New Gold Capital Projects team, the Civil Engineering Fall Co-Op Student is expected to live by the New Gold values of Innovation, Collaboration, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence in their daily work. The successful candidate must demonstrate commitment and compliance with all company and industry Health & Safety, Environmental, and Social Responsibility policies and is responsible for engaging work with the Courage to Care: never compromising on safety, looking out for one another, and stopping work if it is not safe.

The Civil Engineering Fall Co-Op Student will report to the Capital Projects Superintendent or Project Engineer who will direct work assignments in field and office in areas of Tailings Dam Monitoring, Heavy Civil Earthworks, Project Coordination, and Construction Survey. The Civil Engineering Fall Co-Op Student will work from the Construction Office in a multi-disciplinary open office team environment. The scheduled work term will be 4-months from September 2025 to December 2025.

Field and office assignments will include tailings dam inspection, collection of instrumentation geotechnical data (including piezometers, settlement plates, and slope inclinometers), construction survey layout and as-built pick-up, construction project estimating, scheduling, coordination, quality control inspection, administration, and reporting, as well as other duties as assigned. Tasks and assignments will be varied for student exposure across the Capital Projects Department and Rainy River Mine site. Field work may occur in all weather conditions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Strong commitment and adherence to all Health & Safety Policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm and willingness to learn cross-functional department areas.
  • Work collaboratively with a variety of industry professionals across construction and technical disciplines.
  • Conduct tailings dam inspections with the Tailings Dam Technician or Engineer.
  • Conduct regular data collection from piezometers, settlement plats, slope inclinometers, water level readings, and other survey and GPS field work readings, inputting and administering data, and reporting.
  • Conduct construction survey layout and as-built survey data collection.
  • Assist in construction project estimating, scheduling, coordination, and quality control.
  • Assist in department administration and reporting as required.

Qualifications:

  • Must be currently enrolled in an engineering program at a recognized Canadian University and returning to studies following the work term. Civil or Mining Engineering programs are preferred but are not required for consideration.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong ability to self-motivate and self-learn.
  • Strong computer-based skills (Microsoft Suite and others).
  • Able to change and re-prioritize tasks as new information is gathered.
  • Able to work independently or collaborate within multi-disciplinary groups.
  • Previous experience in construction environments with heavy equipment including heavy civil earthworks or mining industrial sites is considered an asset but is not required for consideration.
  • Only candidates available for the full 4-month co-p term from September to December 2025 are eligible
  • Must possess a valid Canadian drivers license

Working Conditions:

  • Field 60% & Office 40%
  • Occasional moderate lifting required (50lbs)
