Job Description:
Reporting to the Payroll & Benefits Supervisor, the Payroll & Benefits Administrator is responsible for, but not limited to, assisting the Payroll & Benefits department with concise and timely completion of bi-weekly and semi-monthly employee payrolls, as well as the completion of all government remittances, payroll and benefits related G/L account reconciliations, and payroll bank account reconciliations.

  • Ensure accurate and timely payroll processing across all scheduled and off-cycle payrolls, while following current legislation and collective agreements
  • Perform a variety of payroll-related activities which requires knowledge of payroll processing procedures and accounting principles
  • Prepare and process various special payments, manual cheques and regular remittances
  • Liaise with Human Resources to ensure that new hire and employee information is received and updated on time, including salary changes, employee transfers, leave of absences, terminations, etc.
  • Entering, editing and maintaining employee information in the Avanti Human Resources/Payroll Information Management System
  • Entering and updating employee benefit information and reconciling to benefit provider records
  • Working with Human Resources to ensure accurate entry of information from the employee on-boarding process and payroll and benefit enrollment forms
  • Process accurate monthly, quarterly and year end filings for source deductions, WSIB and Employer Health Tax (EHT)
  • Assisting with preparation of annual returns (e.g. T4/T4A summaries and slips, WSIB and EHT)
  • Reconcile payroll prior to transmission and validate confirmed reports
  • Process correct garnishment calculations and compliance
  • Perform monthly account balances including journal entries
  • Respond to payroll and benefits inquiries
  • Responsible for employee correspondence regarding the various company benefit plans
  • Create and maintain payroll and benefits information, files and records and ensure that file information is completed and up to date
  • Ensure confidentiality to payroll information
  • Communicate and resolve any employee concerns and/or questions regarding payroll
  • Review employee expense claims and corporate credit care reconciliations for accuracy and taxable benefit information. Follow up with departments as necessary
  • Other duties and responsibilities, as requested

Travel Information:
Position is based in the Thunder Bay office with regular trips expected to the LDI Mine Site.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2 years of payroll, benefits and/or HRIS processing experience required
  • Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) through the National Payroll Institute considered an asset
  • Experience working in a unionized environment
  • Knowledge of group benefits
  • Experience with various software solutions for payroll and scheduling as well as Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat
  • Work well under pressures, high attention to detail, ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills, effective organizational skills, expertise at managing multiple projects or activities
  • Active listening and leadership skills
  • Ability to work independently and adapt in a consistently changing environment
  • Strong and effective communication and problem solving skills
  • Ability to motivate and foster an environment of teamwork.
